Luck Is Not a Business Strategy

How Simple, Intentional Planning Creates Lasting Business Impact

It’s March! WHAT?!?! And the end of Q1! WHAT?!?! I’ll save the ole “this year sure is flying by." I should be used to it by now.

And with it being the month that we associate with luck (thank you, St. Patrick’s Day), I thought I would make that the theme of Kristi’s Korner this month. Specifically, luck versus strategy.

Here’s a note for you, small business owners and leaders… I know, we start or lead a business typically because we love the thing that the business does or sells. We have a passion for aerospace engineering, or we love coffee and providing it to our customers, or marketing is our jam and helping our clients with it brings us joy. And so many times, while we are building and running the business that is what we love to do, we lean on luck to continue to make our business successful and a market leader. Our time is so valuable and there are SO MANY fires and demands, strategy takes a back seat.

So why, as a business owner/leader, would I suggest that you carve out precious time to develop and work an organizational strategic plan? Because I strongly believe that can be the difference in an organization remaining successful, being a market leader, and having alignment and buy in from employees. Or not.

A good strategic plan does not have to be uber complicated. It can be 1 year to 5 years and can also contain short term goals for each year, your company’s mission/vision, and core values. There are so many tools out there. EOS/Traction is one I love and use pieces of in my own business. There are also a plentitude of strategic planning facilitators that can help you and your team create, implement and manage your plan.

To boil it down, this is strategy, not luck. It is about being intentional with where you are, where you want to go, what your opportunities are and how you are going to do it all. Again, it does not have to be complicated. Go search the internet, there are tons of examples, tips and tools out there.

Just start somewhere, because eventually, luck will run out and strategy will keep you going.

Reach out if we can support your strategy or anything else.

Happy almost Spring!
