Salary: $96-104K DOE 

Our client is seeking a confident, detail-oriented, and dynamic Director of Accounting and Payroll to join their team. In this pivotal role, you will oversee cash management, investments, the monthly financial close process, bond and debt activities, survey preparation, and annual audit and 990 preparations. Additionally, you will manage the payroll function, ensuring timely and accurate processing, and support the monthly closing of accounts and preparation of financial reports. Collaborating closely with other departments, you will analyze and reconcile accounts, and develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and controls. Essential Functions (Responsibilities):

  • Monthly Financial Close: Manage the monthly financial close process, reviewing journal entries, account balance reconciliations, and preparing reports.

  • Accounting Policies & Procedures: Participate in the ongoing development and establishment of accounting policies, procedures, and operational strategies, including the review and implementation of process and system changes.

  • Process Improvements: Focus on improving system efficiencies and business practices.

  • Strategic Financial Projects: Participate in strategic financial projects, including upgrades and system implementations.

  • Internal Controls & Compliance: Ensure compliance with internal control policies and collaborate with external auditors to ensure successful audit results and compliance.

  • Stakeholder Interaction: Interact at all levels with budget owners or other stakeholders to produce timely, efficient, and accurate month-end close and all internal management and financial reporting through the annual report.

  • Chart of Accounts & General Ledger: Responsible for hierarchy and scalability in the chart of accounts, accuracy in the general ledger and financial statements, and has ultimate authority over classification and booking of all transactions.

  • Statutory Accounting Practices: Analyze the effect of statutory accounting practices and study regulations and guidance to ensure the correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Fraud Prevention & Policy Adherence: Make recommendations for changes as needed, ensure company policies and procedures are followed, and establish proper techniques to discover and prevent fraud.

  • Journal Entries & Account Analyses: Prepare detailed journal entries and account analyses.

  • Tax Return Support: Assist with the compilation of information for preparation of tax returns.

  • Coordination of Financial Accounting Activities: Work with Audit, Tax, and Treasury Manager to ensure overall coordination of all financial accounting activities through the annual report.

  • Variance Analysis: Prepare summary feedback of financial statement variances to budget.

  • Process Review & Advisory: Actively review and advise on financial/accounting processes.

  • Other Responsibilities: Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Experience using enterprise resource planning (ERP) and accounting systems, with well-developed financial analysis capabilities.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage integrated applications.
  • Strong analytical ability to interpret and use complex data with a logical and data-driven work style.
  • Self-motivated and able to lead and work as a member of a team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, with excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, influence, and build relationships with all levels of the organization and manage a team to implement new projects.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • High attention to detail, with demonstrated practice of establishing effective priorities and meeting deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA

  • Experience with a university or other not-for-profit accounting.
