Flying solo in HR? You don’t have to do it alone anymore.
If you’re flying solo in the HR department, you know the struggle is real! Juggling all the responsibilities of human resources with limited resources, time, and help can feel like a never-ending circus act. But don’t fret! You’re not alone, and there are ways to tackle these challenges head-on. I may have hit my head a time or two myself……
I've been the lone HR ranger in organizations, and while there are rewards, there were plenty of challenges. I’d plan my day, but my day and the people had other ideas. I would have been over the moon to have The People Perspective Playbook in my toolkit, but alas, it didn’t exist back then!
From managing recruitment and onboarding to handling employee relations and compliance, my to-do list was never-ending. With a tight budget and minimal staff, I made do with what I had: my tools, vendor partners, and trusty Outlook calendar. I blocked out strategic time to prioritize tasks and find creative solutions to get things done. I like to call this “Calendar Tetris.” Not my favorite game, but necessary then AND now! Time is precious, and there’s never enough of it. While I did what I could to manage the challenges, they never truly were solved and truly compounded as more projects, turnover, and typical “HR whirlwind” activities occurred.
Now, let’s talk about those challenges:
- Balancing urgent tasks with long-term goals: It’s like trying to keep a bunch of plates spinning while riding a unicycle. Fun, right?
- Keeping up with ever-changing labor laws: Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, they change the rules. It’s like playing a game where the rules change every 5 minutes. And if there is a new administration, shorten that window to 2 minutes.
- Handling employee issues: From conflict resolution to performance management, it’s like being a referee in a never-ending game where everyone thinks they’re right.
- Finding and welcoming new talent: It’s like dating, but with more paperwork and fewer romantic dinners. Swipe right on that perfect candidate!
